“Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse
At Heartwood, our intent is that every child has the right to create and express themselves with confidence and imagination. To ensure that our children are taught consistently with high expectations, we use KAPOW's combined Art & Design and Design & Technology scheme of work. The subjects alternate on a half-termly basis and are taught by Mrs Weeks in our Art Studio.
The Art curriculum is designed with five strands that run throughout:
Using sketchbooks
Generating ideas
Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
Knowledge of artists
Evaluating and Analysing
The DT Curriculum is designed with three strands that run throughout:
Each child in KS1 and KS2 has their own sketchbook which evidences their progressive journey through a project. Children use the sketchbook to explore ideas, collect information and inspiration, learn and practise new skills & techniques and reflect on and critique their work.
Toast, Talk and Tales
When children arrive in the morning they prepare their own toast from fresh bread delivered from the local bakery Wellbreads. The children take responsibility for spreading, cutting and washing up their plates and knives. This is set up in a serene atmosphere where the children can socialise and talk with their peers and adults, very much a recreation of a family breakfast experience.
Heartwood Woodwork Hut
We are delighted to have a fully trained woodwork teacher, who leads both curricular and extra-curricular sessions with our children. The sessions are aimed at Years 1-6 and are held in the Heartwood Woodwork Hut.
In EYFS we begin to explore building and designing with a range of woodwork materials during continuous provision.
We are proud to be members of the D&T Association.
Making a Difference
We create projects to share with the community and beyond. Art and DT communicates messages and brings the community together for pleasure and enjoyment. This was evident in the galleries that we have participated in and held.
Teaching the children about different artists and mediums broadens their cultural capital and gives them a window into the world of artists, bringing along empathy, admiration, respect and tolerance.
We share and gift our artwork with the community.
Arts Mark Award
Heartwood is delighted to be awarded the Silver Arts Mark award. We have been praised on enriching the Art experiences for our children and building strong links with the wider community through the Arts.
Cultural education gives children and young people the opportunity to develop their creativity, both individually and collectively, and that is why our goal for every is for child and young person to experience the richness of the arts.

It is vital that children have the opportunity to learn and enjoy arts and culture from an early age. It develops their creativity, inspires future careers and enriches their childhood.

Go Go T-Rex
We were excited to take part in the Go Go T-Rex trail for 2022! The children designed the T-Rex, created the design using mixed media and then hunted for it in Norwich!
The Nicholas Hamond Academy
Our curriculum is designed to prepare the children for the next stages in their education in each subject. Our curriculum map plans to support the declarative and procedural knowledge needed for the children to access and thrive in Art & DT in KS3.
