British Values
Promoting Fundamental British Values
In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is "right" and "wrong", all people living in England are subject to its law.
At Heartwood we see British Values as underpinning what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Britain. They allow us to create environments free from discrimination, intolerance and hate. They help us to challenge prejudice and stereotyping, whilst strengthening relationships within the community.
The Key Values are:
- democracy
- rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
Democracy is promoted through pupil voice, including class voting, school and eco-councils and regular pupil questionnaires.
The rule of law is reinforced through clear expectations, our Relationship and Behaviour Policy, collective worship and visits from services such as the Police and Fire Service.
Individual liberty is encouraged by providing pupils with safe opportunities to make choices in learning, extra-curricular activities and through online-Safety and life skills education.
Mutual respect underpins all relationships within the school community and is modelled and reinforced consistently.
Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs is actively promoted through collective worship, RE, Life Skills, visitors and visits to places of worship. Any views contrary to fundamental British Values are actively challenged.
