The aims and objectives of Science are in line with the National Curriculum and enables children to: 

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics 

  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them 

  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Intent

At Heartwood, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. In science, like all subjects, we mirror our Heartwood Vision.  We aim to grow curious minds with a thirst for knowledge and responsible minds that use scientific knowledge and skills to 'Make a Difference' locally and globally. 

The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to ask questions, make observations, carry out investigations, record data in a variety of ways and analyse and present their findings. We explore how science influences everyday life and drives progress in society.  

Implementation

Throughout the programmes of study, pupils will acquire and develop the key knowledge identified within each unit and across each year group. This knowledge is carefully mapped to the National Curriculum and builds progressively towards clearly defined phase ‘end points’, in line with National Curriculum expectations. The curriculum is designed to be both ambitious and accessible, ensuring that all learners are supported to fully participate and achieve their potential. 

Key skills are also mapped for each year group and show clear progression throughout the school. These skills ensure a systematic development towards identified end points, in line with the Working Scientifically expectations outlined in the National Curriculum. 

The curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils acquire key scientific knowledge through a range of practical experiences, including using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts with confidence. Cross-curricular opportunities are carefully identified, mapped and planned to enhance contextual relevance and deepen understanding. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore their curiosity about the world around them, and develop a genuine enthusiasm for science. 

In Nursery and Reception 'Understanding the World' is taught through planned topics and continuous provision. Adults work closely with children to develop their understanding through meaningful interactions, direct teaching and play. 

Children in KS1 and KS2 have weekly science lessons and are taught to work scientifically by: 

  • Questioning 

  • Scientific enquiry – comparative and fair testing, researching, observation over time, pattern – seeking, identifying, grouping and classifying and problem-solving. 

  • Drawing conclusions based on data and observations. 

  • Using evidence to justify ideas. 

  • Using scientific knowledge to explain findings. 

Retrieval practice is embedded within the curriculum to ensure that pupils develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts. This approach supports them in building on prior learning, making meaningful connections between ideas, and addressing potential misconceptions effectively. 

Impact

Pupils demonstrate curiosity and inquisitiveness, supported by secure substantive and disciplinary knowledge. They are confident in asking questions, making predictions, carrying out research, and observing with increasing accuracy. Pupils can draw informed conclusions, conduct fair tests, and use evidence to justify their ideas. They are able to apply their scientific knowledge to explain their findings clearly and with growing confidence, demonstrating a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.
