Making a Difference
A Memorable Curriculum
We aim to provide a safe, nurturing environment and a rich variety of experiences so that all pupils are able to flourish and discover their unique strengths and talents. Our mission is to enable every child to enjoy a life filled with meaning and purpose, underpinned by Christian values, a love of learning and an eagerness to make the world a better place.
Our curriculum is called ‘Making a Difference’ as all our learning is guiding our children to grow and develop into wonderful and thoughtful citizens who make a difference to their community and society. Each unit of learning will work towards a purposeful act that will make a difference.
The language rich, and hands on learning experiences in which our vision and values are woven through are engaging and exciting for our children. Based on deepening knowledge and skills our children are given the skills for life to become artists, historians, scientists, designers, musicians, mathematicians, writers, readers, geographers and sports men and women.
We plan to broaden the range of experiences for our children including visitors, experiences and trips around the country and a potential trip to France in Year 6!
Children at Heartwood CE VC Primary and Nursery School Learn to love- love to learn!
"Live life in all its fullness" (John 10:10)
At Heartwood CE VC Primary and Nursery School we offer a broad and balanced curriculum which enriches the children's knowledge and skills through fun experiences and hands on learning.
We have the '78 of the things that children at Heartwood Primary experience before they are 12' which enhances our curriculum offer and gives our children a wealth of experiences, skills and vocabulary.
Find information about our curriculum subjects here. If you require any further information regarding the curriculum we follow please email or call the school Office and ask for Mrs McMillen.
Diversity
At Heartwood, promoting diversity is an extremely important value.
We are aware that our Primary school consists predominantly of white British pupils. Their day-to-day experiences do not expose them to a very broad cultural background. One of our areas for improvement is to help children learn more about the customs and beliefs of the many different communities in our own country and to develop the core values of acceptance and respect. Conversations with and between children demonstrate a lack of awareness of diversity at times – we want to change this and to challenge stereotypical views.
At Heartwood, diversity is celebrated throughout as many curriculum areas as possible and we are constantly seeking opportunities to extend this further. Our aim is to provide as many opportunities as possible in order for our children to widen and enrich their understanding and acceptance of different cultures.
We are conscious that diversity is not an add on thing. Our books, resources and toys reflect a wide range of cultures and diversities. Celebrations of key black influencers, both male and female are carefully planned throughout the school curriculum.
Long Term Topic Plan
This is the long term topic plan. It is a working document as we are working on enriching and developing our curriculum.
We have planned for when the school has KS2 cohorts to ensure that there is progression and knowledge and skills are built upon.
Each topic opens with an enquiry question and an area of the curriculum where the learning will dig deeper and build on the children's prior knowledge and skills. The curriculum is named 'Making a Difference' as each unit will ensure that the children are having a impact on their school, community, country and world around them to help them to continue to develop into wonderful citizens.
